Plastic Free North Devon Day at Croyde Beach

A few of our Year 6 pupils, accompanied by Mr.Wiggans, joined other children from a number of North Devon Schools for this day to look at the impact plastic is having on our coastline and wildlife.

The pupils joined a local artist in producing a massive wave picture on one of the fields behind the beach. A total of 280 thrown away camping air beds had been collected from one local campsite this season. A vast amount of waste plastic.

The pupils were then split into groups and attended a variety of workshops looking at the effect waste plastic is having on our environment. We looked at how much plastic waste was on the beach and sorted it into into larger pieces and micro plastic particles.

A highlight was the session on virtual reality sea life where the pupils were transported to the Great Barrier Reef with the aid of their virtual reality goggles. They explored the different underwater wildlife and discussed the effect of plastic waste on the marine life.

The day was extremely interesting and highlighted the damage being produced by single use plastic.
